Review Feuds

Oh my goodness, "Feuds," the eighteenth Valdemar anthology, was a pure delight! As a longtime fan, practically raised on the magic and camaraderie of Valdemar since high school, this collection felt like coming home. The timing couldn't have been better, as I was in the midst of a chronological reread of the entire series, including all the previous anthologies. Sliding this one into the mix was seamless and incredibly satisfying.

The anthology, as expected, features a wonderful mix: a brand-new novella by Mercedes Lackey herself (which, more on that later!), stories from familiar Valdemar authors, and exciting contributions from newcomers to the world. Now, let's be honest, not every story was a perfect five-star read for me. Writing styles are subjective, and what resonates with one reader might not quite hit the mark for another. But even the stories that didn't completely captivate me were still well-written and enjoyable; it really just came down to personal preference.

What I loved most was the revisiting of familiar characters from previous mini-series – a real treat for those of us who have followed their journeys for years. Even better, you don't need to have read those earlier entries to enjoy these stories; each one stands perfectly well on its own. It was also fantastic to see Lackey weaving moments that added to the richness of some of my favorite books. That connection to the larger narrative, that feeling of being part of a continuous, evolving world, is what keeps me coming back to Valdemar time and time again.

And then there's Lackey's novella, "Uncivil Blood." Honestly, I could write a whole separate review just for that one! It’s a glorious return to Vanyel and Savil, a story that's both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Seeing Vanyel, years after "Magic's Pawn," still raw and tender, was intensely emotional – in the best possible way. The Romeo and Juliet allusions were cleverly done, and the entire story was just beautifully written. It alone makes the anthology worth the price of admission. Seriously, I may have shed a few happy tears.

The rest of the anthology is a good mix of interesting stories, some focusing on familiar Heralds and others exploring the lives of other Valdemar citizens, like bards and students. While I personally would have loved more Herald-centric tales, the variety keeps things fresh and engaging. The overall tone is hopeful, even amidst the feuds, which perfectly captures the spirit of Valdemar.

Overall, "Feuds" is a solid addition to the Valdemar library. While it might not be a perfect ten out of ten for everyone, for a long-time fan like myself, it's a five-star experience. It’s a book I’ll be happily rereading and recommending to other fans for years to come. Bring on the next anthology!
